Hypnotherapy – Brief Introduction

I have been a qualified clinical hypnotherapist since 2001 and am still amazed at the wonderful results I see from this therapy

Hypnosis is a natural and effective technique for accessing the subconscious mind – the key to unleashing an individual’s potential, changing unwanted habits and behaviours and finding solutions to problems and concerns When we become totally engrossed in something like reading a book or looking at a beautiful landscape or just sit and daydream and everything else seems to just fade away we are experiencing something very similar to being in a hypnotic state.

Hypnotherapy – how does it work?

Hypnosis is a very safe and natural state that we all go into easily several times each day. Every one of us passes through a dreamlike state similar to hypnosis just before we fall asleep and just at the point when we awaken. Anyone who has driven somewhere and on arriving realises they cannot remember part of the journey will recognise the altered state of awareness one experiences in hypnosis. During hypnotherapy the therapist attempts to address the client’s subconscious mind in order for the individual to make the required changes to their behaviours and or thought patterns.

Hypnotherapy can be used for a wide variety medical and psychological conditions ranging from anxiety to weight issues.



Q. Is hypnosis brainwashing?

A. No, absolutely not. A clinical hypnotherapist will make suggestions to the person who is undergoing hypnosis, the suggestions will be centred around helping the individual make the changes they wish to make to help them reach their personal goals and aspirations. These suggestions will only be taken on board by the individual if it is what they truly want. Nobody can influence a person undergoing hypnosis to behave in a manner that is against their ethical and moral framework.

Q. Is the therapist controlling client’s thinking?

A. No, when you undergo hypnosis you learn the ultimate in self-control
Q. Will I be asleep during the session?

A. Some people are so relaxed when they are under hypnosis they fall asleep, that is fine because the sub-conscious mind still continues to listen to the therapist’s voice but hypnosis is not a general anaesthetic in other words you are not ‘knocked out’, nor are you immobilised. You can move, sneeze, cough and scratch an itch. You hear sounds around you can hold a conversation with your therapist and you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state if you wish to.

Q. What does it feel like to be hypnotised?

A.  It is different for different people. Each person has their unique experience. Some people remember the suggestions made by the therapist, some do not, some people see vivid imagery, some people allow their minds to drift off following their own thoughts, some people feel very light and floats whilst others experience a deep, heavy restfulness.
